Sloppy What?

The other day my sister told me she made these Sloppy Joes that were so good her family devoured them. Sloppy Joes. That took me right back to our dinner table on Hamilton Avenue excited about eating. It took me back to younger faces of my siblings surrounding a table. White hamburger buns. And my mom rarely bought anything white. Heck, she made a lot of the bread we ate. But certainly didn't buy AIR bread on a regular basis. Hamburger buns were a treat!

Anyway, after hearing how my sister's family delighted in such a simple pleasure, I was eager to do the same. So...Lindsay sat down at the table and an immediate look of questioning crossed her face.

"What's this?" It was as if I was forcing her to eat hot lunch. Come to think of it, it maybe wasn't far from the truth of the matter.

To make the situation at hand even worse, her Dad started laughing.

In my defense: "It's Sloppy Joes! They are SO good. I used to eat them all the time when I was a kid. You have to eat it." Right then I transformed into my mother. Another look then crossed Lindsay's face after sampling my culinary treasure. It was a look of disgust.

"Lindsay...you have to eat most of it." I could see it was hard for her to swallow. I guess times have changed. Enough so that I won't be making Sloppy What again! So tonight...Hamburger Helper?

Oh sick, Hamburger Helper? That stuff is disgusting. Paige asked last night for Sloppy Joes again tonight. At least they are made out of real ingredients, unlike Hamburger Heartburn like you'll enjoy tonight.

But I do agree w/you on one thing...it WAS a treat to ever see white bread in our house!

Hilarious! I still love sloppy joes. My children still feel the same way about white buns. And some of them love sloppy joes and others hate 'em. Nate can't stand them. I bought some canned sloppy joe meat from the cannery--which is not as good as homemade, but faster--and Nate just GROANS when he sees that stuff warmin' on the stove. Easy for him to do--he's not making dinner! I just told my children yesterday that you love to eat the stuff you loved as a child.

White bread? What's that? If you can squeeze one slice into a gumball in your hand, it ain't comin' in the kitchen door to my house!
Funny how we love certain things from our childhood which another generation thinks is disgusting:
chard with lemon juice, baked squash with nutmeg, friend liver and onions!
Ah, well...

Actually, to clear up any misconceptions, it was "fried liver and onions."
It never seemed too friendly to my children.
