So the worst has happened. Our little Annie was burrowing in the rocks up high by the fence today and got bit. When she came in our house, Hayden asked why her cheeks looked funny. I didn't pay much attention until I heard Mallory's screams from the other room once Annie slowly made her way in there. I KNEW something dire had happened.
We went immediately to our Vet, who thankfully, is 3 minutes away. They couldn't find the snake bite -- so we initially thought it might be a bee. Her cheeks were completely swollen. They gave her intraveneous IV meds and said they'd call us in 30 minutes to let us know if the swelling had gone down. It didn't. Probably not a bee sting. It's 7 pm at this point...time to transport our little Annie to the Pet Emergency Center. They finally found the fang marks in her little nose.
The bad news is I never got her the shot for snakes! Good intentions...bad move.
Even worse news: No more anti-venom vaccine left in California -- they ran out two weeks ago from all the rattlesnake pet bites. So it's a wait and see...50/50 chance. It's been a horrible night -- the girls are a mess. If she makes it through the night then she'll probably be okay. They said 2 little dogs got bit last week and made it just fine. While comforting, Mallory said Annie just looked horrible; her face was more swollen and so was her neck. But, her tail still wagged when Mallory came back to comfort and pet her and she whimpered when she had to say good-bye. Mallory did more than whimper.
Not over yet. Lindsay's been at soccer the whole night. We had to go through it all over again. She took one look at the bunch of us and knew something was really wrong. It took less than 3 seconds for the tears to come.
Keep Annie in your thoughts. She really is an awesome pet that has brought a lot of joy to our home. Even though I complain and joke about our little hot dog, in times like these you realize how much you love your pet, and what she means to the family. I guess that is why we get them in the first place!
